The smallest boat under DP control

1 February, 2016

The scaling model of icebreaking platform supply vessel “Vitus Bering” was successfully positioned under control of Navis Engineering DP system. The test performed in Aker Arctic ice model testing facility in Helsinki. Clone of the actual DP system and scaled mathematical model of the parent ship used to control the boat.

This experiment is a part of the cooperation agreement between Aker Arctic and Navis Engineering with the aim to develop DP systems and specific control algorithms for operation in ice.

Test results open new opportunities in research and development of new ship designs, and are of special interest for the test of the vessel behaviour in ice conditions.

Vitus Bering is a multipurpose icebreaking supply vessel built by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard with concept design done by Aker Arctic. Owned by Sovcomflot vessel operates in the Arkutun-Dagi oil field in the Sea of Okhots.

Aker Arctic Technology Inc (Aker Arctic) is an independent company that specializes in the development, design, engineering and testing services for the ice-going vessels, icebreakers and offshore marine structures and ports. Aker Arctic’s head office is located in Helsinki, Finland.

Navis Engineering Oy is a privately owned developer and manufacturer of dynamic positioning and vessel motion control systems. Head office of the company is located in Vantaa, Finland.
