History

Navis was founded in 1992 by four scientists who were then collaborating on various engineering research projects at the shipbuilding faculty of the St. Petersburg Electrical Engineering University.

The first Navis commercial product, a ship motion model for a Transas PC-based navigation simulator, was launched in 1993.

In 1995, Navis developed a sophisticated software product for identifying safe passage routes amidst cross- and counter-heading targets. This program is still successfully applied as an integral part of Transas and Morintech electronic chart systems.

1996 saw the launch of the ship equipment repair audit system developed by Navis for the Russian Navy.

Since the very inception of the company, Navis has been recognized throughout the Russian shipping industry as a unique developer and supplier of high-end, precise and reliable ship automation solutions combining advanced mathematical and engineering skills with profound hands-on knowledge of needs of shipping users. Some of the Navis’ clients in the 90ies included the Simferopol shipbuilding plant and the Russian Coast Guard.

In 1997, Navis successfully completed a technical project providing for the development of a vessel control system for a hovercraft of ST Marine from Singapore.

In 1999, Navis commenced its activities in the international market. The partnership with Beier and Associates Inc. from the USA stimulated a live interest towards Navis systems throughout the North-American offshore industry. In 2000, the first Navis Dynamic Positioning System successfully passed sea trials and was installed on an offshore supply vessel to replace an existing competitive system.

In 2001, the IVCS (Integrated Vessel Control System) manufactured by Navis received a DPS design assessment from ABS. Following this certification, Navis products have also been certified by the Russian River Register and the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

During the years 2003 and 2004, Navis has further enhanced its international presence, primarily, through partnerships with Jastram from Canada and Alphatron from the Netherlands.

Today, NavisIVCS and other ship automation solutions are installed on board over 100 vessels worldwide. International clients of Navis include NOAA, Hornbeck Offshore Service, Candy fleet, AMT Marine amongst many others.
